I’m into the second month of my residency at the SF Dump, and though I’ve begun producing work for my show in January, I’m also pushing myself to play with new materials and see with more sensitivity and clarity when I go to scavenge. The images below are how I am seeing my work environment this week. I’ve also been invited to speak at a local college about my experience at the AIR Program and my process.
I’ve sifted through the trash for a month now and found inspiration at every turn. I’ve begun a mural on one of the walls of my Studio and am working on 5 drawings simultaneously. Images keep flowing through my head. Ideas are oozing out everywhere. The footage for my video is also beginning to form. I can’t wait to see what the next month holds for me . . .
Here are some images that capture my first month experience.
My work outfit.
These steel-toed and steel-shanked boots take me everywhere I need to go.
One of the places I need to go. I practically run to the collection center now in anticipation of finding something good.
Beauty can be found anywhere.
Another day over – another one still ahead. The images will keep coming even after this residency is over.
I’ve been crazy busy digging through the mounds of trash at the SF Dump and have found some amazing gems! I’ve begun drawing and am so excited about the things I am learning and the direction my work is going!!! For now, I will give you just a peek of a few of the items I have collected and a view of my studio space as it begins to fill up.
Here are some amazing images of Chinese artist Liu Bolin. He is an inspiration for his originality and skill. In these images, he paints himself into the background and literally becomes part of the landscape!
Here’s a quick inside view of the Dump, just before I go in to scavenge. Feels a bit ominous, but I’m still up to the challenge of seeking out treasures and inspiration to put on a great show in less than four months!
